CUSTOM BABY CRIB

The project was focused on functionality and handicap accessibility. The father is paralyzed from the waist down so reaching over a traditional tall edged crib from a wheelchair was difficult. The task was to create a quick and accessible way to open the doors and grab an infant without the neat to stand up. We tackled this unique request and created a latch system with double doors that opened out individually with complete access to the mattress level.

PROJECT BUILD OVERVIEW

  • WOOD SPECIES

    Ash Hardwood
All pieces fabricated from 4/4, 5/4, and 8/4 ash hardwood providing great durability and flexibility. (Ash is a type of wood that is used in baseball bats because of the flexibility. Less popular than maple.)

  • METHOD & TOOLS

Each slat is a mortise and tenon joint.

The beaded headboard is made with hand made TIG paneling then set into a dado (wide groove) in the stiles and rails.

Rabbeted the bottom and top of each TIG piece so there were no “spider traps” from the beaded profile sliding into the dado.

  • UNIQUE ELEMENTS

Out of this whole project only 16 bolts are used to hold the frame together.

There are four bolts on each side of the headboard that carry the sides of the crib body set into threaded receivers to provide a solid metal to metal connection. This allows the customer to take the sides off and use the headboard as a full sized bed as the baby ages.

Another 4 bolts holds a stretcher across the front connect both side. (2 on each side of the door on the bottom.

The last four bolts carry the bottom of the crib that the mattress will rest on. We allowed for three heigh adjustments to be made as the baby ages as well and starts to sit and stand on their own.
